Galaxy Z Fold 8 may arrive soon, and the biggest upgrades just leaked

For the past two years, Samsung has launched its flagship foldable smartphones in July, and the upcoming 8-series foldables are expected to arrive sometime in the latter half of the month. This time, Samsung appears to have three foldables planned instead of the usual two, including the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to keep the familiar tall form factor seen on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 may be the more interesting model, as it is expected to adopt a shorter and wider design. Ahead of launch, alleged specifications for this model have surfaced through a post on X by SamMobile.

A wider Fold with smaller screen sizes

The leak claims the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will feature a 5.5-inch cover display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 7.6-inch main display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Both panels are said to be 120Hz OLED screens.

Samsung’s change in foldable strategy arrives as Apple is also rumored to be preparing its first foldable iPhone. That device is also expected to use a shorter and wider form factor with a 4:3 inner display.

The 4:3 inner display will make the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feel more like a small tablet than Samsung’s previous Fold models. A wider layout should be better suited for reading, browsing, viewing photos, multitasking, and working with documents.

The leak also claims the phone will be lighter than its predecessor at 201 grams, while measuring 9.7mm when folded, making it almost a millimeter thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Will battery and charging finally improve?

Under the hood, the phone is said to arrive with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor, paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The camera setup may be more controversial. The post points to only two rear cameras, a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP ultrawide. Recently leaked case renders also show two camera cutouts on the back, making the dedicated telephoto camera look increasingly unlikely for this model.

Battery and charging could bring the most meaningful upgrade, as the tweet mentions a 4,800mAh battery and 45W wired charging, which would be a notable jump for Samsung’s Fold lineup. For context, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 launched with a 4,400mAh battery and 25W wired charging, so this would address one of the series’ long-running weak spots. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 may not get the same treatment. That model is still said to stick with 25W wired charging.
