If you have ever opened an app on your Wear OS smartwatch and had no idea what time it was, Google is working on a fix. In October, the company launched a Wear OS canary emulator inside Android Studio. It lets developers try out new features and design tweaks well before Google ships them to anyone’s wrist.
The biggest addition in this build is a status bar that never leaves. It lives at the top edge of your round watch face, floats above whatever app you have open, and keeps the clock and your watch’s status icons in view.
What does the new status bar look like?
Google wants the clock to look identical everywhere, so the font, position, and the plate behind it will be uniform across Wear OS and every app you use. That should make your watch feel more polished. If an app truly needs every pixel of the screen, its developer can tuck the bar away.

How will it work inside your favorite apps?
Apps built with Jetpack Compose for Wear OS will switch over automatically once they target API level 35 or higher and run Compose 1.8.0-alpha02 or newer. The system takes charge of the clock, so you won’t see two different times fighting for space.

The bar will hide automatically once you start scrolling through a list. It will reappear roughly two seconds after you stop. Alerts, steppers, and time and date pickers that fill the screen will also make the bar disappear while you use them. Developers can hide it on immersive screens as well.
When can you expect it on your watch?
The emulator carries the Wear OS 7.1 label and runs on Android 17 “CinnamonBun,” so a new update is clearly coming. That said, Google is keeping it in this canary build for early testing and feedback, and it might now appear in the stable Wear OS 7.1 release. You might have to wait for a later release to see it on your wrist.
