Several early reports of iPhone Duo screens breaking share one suspiciously consistent detail. The damage appears around a similar section of the fold.
In one moderator-verified Reddit post, an Australian owner said the phone broke after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings. Something felt wrong beneath the display just before it cracked. The moderators verified the damaged device and its replacement, not what caused it.
Another owner reported that the hinge tightened after roughly four folds, then produced a loud pop when pushed farther. Both owners said Apple replaced their phones. These accounts document early failures though, but a few Reddit posts can’t establish a failure rate.
Two teardowns now offer a look beneath the damaged area.
What iFixit thinks may happen
iFixit reconstructed the hinge using teardown footage, CT scans, and Apple’s patents. Its model places the reported breaks near the transition between the opening for an accordion-style cable and the central hinge support, rather than directly over the cable.
One simulation shows the center support bar failing to drop completely as the phone folds. The display could then press against the raised section, concentrating stress in the same general area as the reported damage. iFixit didn’t reproduce that sequence during its teardown, so the model remains a possible explanation.
What CuriousHagi found inside
CuriousHagi had physical damage to examine. Inside his phone, a central ring-style hinge link had snapped. The link was thinner than the surrounding pieces and broke near a small notch. He also found contact marks around the adjoining support structure, but no debris that explained the break.
His theory is that the hinge became misaligned before the link snapped and struck the display from below. His phone had already undergone durability testing, while other unofficial fold tests didn’t produce the same sudden failure. That makes it difficult to apply his proposed sequence to phones that broke during ordinary use.
What owners should do now
Neither teardown can show whether other phones will fail or whether every damaged screen shares one cause. They do provide a sensible warning sign.
If the hinge suddenly feels tighter than usual or starts making an unfamiliar sound, don’t force it through. Have the phone inspected instead. A $2,000 foldable isn’t the place to test whether a worrying noise was probably nothing.
