iPhone users can finally get live translation on their headphones through Google Translate

Google is bringing one of its best AI-powered Google Translate features to iPhone users at last. Live Translate with headphones is now rolling out on iOS, months after its debut on Android in December.

The feature turns your headphones into a real-time translator to help you understand conversations as they happen without staring at your phone.

Google says the live translation feature works across more than 70 languages and is expanding to more regions, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand, and the U.K.

How Google is turning your headphones into a live translator

Google

Live translation works directly through the Google Translate app. Once you connect your headphones, the app listens to spoken language and delivers a translated version in your ears.

The experience goes beyond word-for-word translation. Google says it preserves tone and cadence, so you can better understand the nuance of what is being said.

This builds on Google’s broader push with Gemini-powered translation, which focuses on understanding meaning and nuance instead of literal phrasing. That means it can handle slang, expressions, and more natural speech patterns more effectively.

Bringing real-time translation into everyday conversations

Google

The feature is designed for everyday use. You can use it to follow conversations with family members or friends who speak a different language. It can also help you understand announcements while traveling, or get local recommendations without missing context.

Getting started is pretty straightforward. Download and open the Translate app, tap Live Translate, and connect your headphones. From there, the app handles rest of the translation in real time.

Google is also expanding Translate in other ways, from letting you choose between faster or more accurate translations to testing a pronunciation coach that helps fix your accent.
